About the Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced and analytical Inventory Accounting Manager to lead inventory accounting, valuation, reconciliation, financial reporting, and internal control activities across the organization. This role will ensure inventory records accurately reflect operational activity and comply with applicable accounting standards and company policies.
The Inventory Accounting Manager will partner closely with Finance, Accounting, Supply Chain, Procurement, Operations, Warehousing, and FP&A teams to improve inventory accuracy, strengthen controls, manage costing processes, and provide reliable financial insights to leadership.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead inventory accounting activities across multiple locations, business units, or product categories.
- Oversee inventory valuation, costing, reserves, adjustments, and reconciliations.
- Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual inventory accounting close activities.
- Review inventory transactions and investigate significant variances.
- Analyze standard costs, actual costs, purchase price variances, and manufacturing variances.
- Establish and maintain inventory accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Reconcile inventory subledgers to the general ledger.
- Monitor inventory reserves for obsolete, excess, damaged, and slow-moving inventory.
- Partner with Supply Chain and Operations to investigate inventory discrepancies.
- Review cycle counts, physical inventory results, and inventory adjustments.
- Prepare inventory-related financial schedules, analyses, and management reports.
- Support annual audits and provide documentation to external and internal auditors.
- Evaluate inventory accounting implications of new products, processes, suppliers, and business initiatives.
- Monitor inventory-related KPIs and identify opportunities for improved accuracy and efficiency.
- Support ERP implementations, system enhancements, and inventory-process improvements.
- Develop financial models and analysis related to inventory and cost of goods sold.
- Mentor and develop accounting professionals supporting inventory functions.
- Ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP and applicable accounting policies.
Job Qualifications and Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
- 6–10 years of progressive accounting experience.
- 3+ years of experience managing inventory accounting or cost accounting functions.
- Strong knowledge of inventory valuation, cost accounting, and financial reporting.
- Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP and internal control principles.
- Experience with manufacturing, distribution, retail, consumer products, or supply-chain environments preferred.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including financial modeling and data analysis.
- Experience with ERP systems such as SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics, or similar platforms.
- Experience with physical inventory, cycle counts, inventory reserves, and reconciliation processes.
- CPA designation or progress toward CPA is preferred.
- Strong analytical, communication, and leadership capabilities.

The Inventory Accounting Manager plays a critical role in protecting the accuracy and integrity of inventory-related financial information. Through effective costing, reconciliation, valuation, and control processes, this position helps management understand inventory investment, gross-margin performance, working capital, and cost trends.
The role also serves as an important bridge between Finance and Supply Chain, helping translate operational inventory activity into accurate financial reporting and actionable business insights.
Working Conditions
- Fully Remote position within the United States.
- Standard Monday through Friday schedule.
- Additional flexibility may occasionally be required during month-end, quarter-end, year-end, and audit periods.
- Frequent virtual collaboration with Accounting, Finance, Supply Chain, Procurement, Operations, and leadership.
- Primarily computer-based work using ERP, accounting, reporting, and analytics systems.
- Occasional travel may be required for physical inventory counts, audits, supplier meetings, or company events.
Job Function
The Inventory Accounting Manager is responsible for inventory valuation, costing, reconciliations, reserves, financial reporting, internal controls, variance analysis, audit support, and management of inventory accounting processes.
Compensation & Benefits
Compensation Package: $170,000 – $225,000 annually, based on accounting leadership experience, inventory complexity, industry expertise, ERP proficiency, CPA status, and overall qualifications.
